Observer named Newspaper of the Year
The Observer has been named newspaper of the year at the British Press Awards, following its change from broadsheet to Berliner format in January 2006.
“It's very much a team effort, and all the parts are important - the brilliant supplements, strong news and comment, sport etc.”
Roger Alton, Editor, The Observer
The judges said "It is the one national newspaper to see a real step-change to becoming the most innovative and stylish newspaper of 2006.  Journalistic and creative flair are the keynotes of a new and uniquely readable compact format.  The Observer is a great Sunday package."

Editor, Roger Alton said "This is a great honour, and all of us at the paper are very thrilled. It's very much a team effort, and all the parts are important - the brilliant supplements, strong news and comment, sport etc. It has been excitingly designed by Caz Roberts. It is, I hope, a jaunty and vigorous package that enlivens the weekend."

This follows on from the five awards The Observer won at the Society of Design Awards, won in March 2007.
The Guardian, which switched to the Berliner format in September 2005, was one of the Awards' main winners, picking up four awards.

The highly regarded Polly Toynbee was named Columnist of the Year.

Patrick Wintour was named Political Journalist of the Year, beating a strong field.

Tom Jenkins picked up Sports Photogapher of the Year - for the third time in four years.

The Guardian's regular series of 'Guides to' supplements, won Supplement of the Year. Recent topics covered included Guides to Cycling, Real Food and Free Stuff.
