Chris Boffey & Lucy Rock
Acting Editors, News
“We have a liberal and independent attitude to the world, encouraging diversity, taking the positive outlook where possible and making it clear that we are beholden to no special interests or lobby groups.”
The news section of The Observer is the entry point for most readers of the paper and as such is vital in setting the initial tone of the product.
We want The Observer to take the lead in breaking the significant, agenda setting stories that get the paper talked about. We also want to have a tone that is warm and engaging, encouraging our readers to spend more time with the news section in the same way they might with the stand-alone magazines or the review section. Content must be varied, from the European Budget rebate to Iraq to the latest arts news to the truth about Kate Moss - interests from across the spectrum.
We have a liberal and independent attitude to the world, encouraging diversity, taking the positive outlook where possible and making it clear that we are beholden to no special interests or lobby groups. We are a paper for free thinkers, an open organisation that wants to be in close contact with our readers. The readers' panel, reader reaction spots in the paper and the weekly email from the editor to readers reflect this.
Sunday is also a day for analysis and making sense of complex issues. We want to be forward looking and also inject a little fun and irreverence into our readers' day. I hope all are reflected in the news section.
